Koi need a balanced diet, just like us, so get this right and you’ll be well on your way to healthy, happy fish.
What should I feed my Koi?
A good quality manufactured food will give your Koi everything they need for health, colour and condition. It will also reduce waste production compared to poor quality foods, which helps keep your pond clean and clear.
What’s in a Koi food?
Many ingredients can be used to provide the nutrients (proteins, vitamins and so on) and energy that Koi need. Importantly, they must contain the right quantity and quality of nutrients, and be easily digestible. This is why it is important to use a good quality food.
How much should I feed?
A Koi’s appetite depends on many things, so there is no set amount to feed. Offer only as much as they can eat in a few minutes, and do this 2-3 times a day. Always remove any uneaten food. Generally, Koi will eat more when the weather is warmer.
What types of food should I give them?
There are many types of food, so start by finding a good ‘staple’ diet – one that can be fed throughout most of the year. You’ll need to feed a special cold-weather food in the winter (usually rich in wheatgerm), and a growth food in the summer (containing more protein and energy).
Should I feed my Koi all year round?
Yes, provided they are active. In the winter, Koi will eat far less but still use up energy. If they are rising to the surface to feed, offer small amounts of a good quality cold-weather diet.
What treats can I give my Koi?
In moderation (less than 5% of the overall diet), treats such as orange and shrimp can add variety, and are fun to feed.
