Koi Food Analysis
After reading Duncans article (http://www.koiquest.co.uk/nutritionpart1.pdf
Has anyone else carried out any Koi Food analysis? I would be interested to see which foods actually meet their claims and also which ones are just repackaged standard food.

Re: Koi Food Analysis
It would be nice if there were someone (without a vested interest) who really knows how and where our £££ koi food is made.
I would guess there are only three or four manufacturers of all koi food, even less in europe.
Cheers, Dave B.

Two in europe coppens and skretings most of your food is made here and just re-packaged or made here with subtle changes to ingredients and colour. Check the ingredients on the packets

Re: Koi Food Analysis
I have done some investigation and I can get analysis done for £65 each sample. I wouldnt mind paying for one but cant pay for 6. Anyone interested in grouping together? If we could get 30 people to give £20 each we could get nearly 10 results.

Hi Dave
You will find that the majority of the koi food is made in Holland not in the UK

Ditto most UK food comes from two suppliers in Holland in bulk and then rebadged, nice little earner

Yep it CERTAINLY is. I found this out a few years ago as a hobbyist and actually became part of a group of hobbyists that buy our food direct these days. Our first experience into this was using coppens and buying in bulk direct.
Only limit we had was we needed to buy 1000 euro at a time and a single shipping address was needed meaning we had to divide the food up ourselves. It worked a treat though and it certainly revealed how much these – buy a few bags of coppens and put it in plastic containers were making out of unsuspecting hobbyists.
Prices as of 2009 for 15kg were:-
Staple EF – £26.44
Grower EF – £27.64
W/Germ – £30.04
Health EF – £30.04
Orange EF – £42.06
Spirulina – £45.06
Top Koi – £54.08
Mix £39.06
So when you see these exact foods in tubs marked up at £15-£20 per couple of KG it suddenly dawns on you how much these kinds of places are making out of you as a hobbyist. Especially as the Mills will deal direct with you no problem. Coppens were quite happy to deliver their range to us direct.
Our group now does this with another manufacturer of a better quality food and we save around 20% off dealer prices for doing this. Between us this year we have had over 40 x 15kg sacks so the manufacturer is happy and we have made quite a saving over the year as a group.
Say 40 sacks at £100 each = £4000 – less 20% discount = £3200 so a total saving over the group of £800 ish.
I certainly know of 3 or 4 big group buys all buying various brands that happened this year as people finally cotton on to this.
Regards,
Greg.

Re: Koi Food Analysis
I would be interested to know which food is better than Coppens, just as a matter of interest.
BTW 20% markup by a small retailer is fair in my opinion. I say this because everywhere you look markup are usually between 10-80% depending on your purchase. Take for example we use Warburton toastie loaf at home, Sainbury’s sells this at £1.35, the same item is £1.00 at Aldi – both companies are distributors and not manufacturers of this item.
