Hi all,

I just wondered if you could help me out for an article we’re running. Basically, I’d love to know what you think about Israeli Koi – whether you’d buy them, what you think of them – in particular what you think of the vaccinated Koi coming from this part of the world.

Thanks!

Beckie

Eeeeek, very brave putting up this thread. [8|]

the quality of Israeli Koi is constantly improving and as such I have bought a wide variety of Israeli Koi
as yet I am still very pleased with growth rates, colour and pattern improvements.
and when I finally get round to posting a few in Donald pic thread I’m sure you will agree [;)]

very very good value for money IMHO.

Ummmm, Magnoy, just the one mate [;)]

Israeli bred koi – No problem per say, seem to serve the lower end of the market quite well and most people couldn’t tell the difference between one and a lower end Japanese fish anyway.
But…………And this is aimed at the rest of the Israeli fish and not the Magnoy scum that deserve to be nuked!

Why buy these fish when there are UK breeders producing as good if not better fish without all the travelling. Support the UK breeders and aid them in their development. That way there is less risk to all involved.

Some farms in Israel produce koi in a controlled way and offer no more risk than anywhere else and supply a good range of fish to a market, Magnoy, cull the fry at birth and dispose of the parents, then nuke the farm, job done.

About 3 years ago I was at the NEC with Andy from Bigfish Aquatics. It was on our way back to the car park, where I was approached by a gentleman who had obviously read an article on my website. The article covered my thoughts on introducing Israeli koi to established ponds. The fella turned out to be a director of a large koi breeding facility in Israel!
He asked me if I was interested in visiting his koi farm so that he could dispel the “K.H.V Myth” to me personally, informing me that his facility was K.H.V free.
I must admit, I did consider going – just to hear his side of the argument. However, I was due to travel to Japan within the month and with my work commitments I could not justify another trip.

It is my opinion that if you expose koi to a contagious virus even at a very small dose, you are creating a “carrier”.
If you introduce the vaccinated koi or “carrier” to a new environment, where other non vaccinated koi are present, you risk introducing the virus to the new environment possibly infecting existing non vaccinated koi with the virus.

Two years after my encounter with the Koi Director from Israel, I read in Koi Magazine that K.H.V had struck at his farm. In fairness to the koi farm, they did not try to cover up the outbreak.

If you were to want Israeli Koi, you should only use one breeder to supply all of your koi and then all of your koi have undergone the same immunisation process.

There are ponds in this country where the koi are survivors of K.H.V – carriers. This is highly controversial but it is allowed to exist.

It is also important to remember that the virus can be present in any koi without showing any signs in any pond!

It just needs triggering, usually high temps or stress. This is why we heat ramp all newly imported koi during the quarantine weeks, not just once but at least twice.

Sorry to go on but I think I answered the question.

Hi Beckie it is a NO from me [:D] I have had too many conversations with my friends in the world of Koi-health to risk it,as all of my koi are Jap or English bred from Jap blood lines to put an Israeli koi in with them is just too risky.Especially a vaccinated KHV carrier [:@] this vaccination has not been cleared as to it being safe and the consensus of opinion is that they could well be carriers of KHV [:@][:@]
