how much should it cost to build my pond
I have been planning to build the following spec pond for the last couple of months.
pond size 10 x 10 square 6 foot deep.
I was going excavate a hole 12 x 12 x 7
using a single bottom drain i asked my local builder to quote on removing the soil for me, installing the concrete base and building the block work.
I was supplying all the pipework bottom drain and getting it fibre glassed seperately.
He quoted 7k to do the above. I thouhgt this was a little high but do not have a bench mark on how much to pay.
From you experience what would be reasonable.

Re: how much should it cost to build my pond
It does sound a bit pricey but when you chuck in the labour that’s where the money adds up. I’d say to take away my soil, rebar, pour my c35 base mix, blocks, sand and cement for block work, sand, cement and chippings for back fill(which is a hell of a lot, is more than it looks) has cost me roughly 2.5k for 13x12x5.5 deep. It’s taken me months because of the weather but the labour has been hard going. Can’t you do it yourself and save a few ££££’s
Also my blocks would have been twice the price but I’m doing an extension so needed a full wagon load of blocks. 1056 of them

I can’t comment on the north south divide but prices vary unbelievably from company to company. I had quotes for concrete mix variying buy a few hundred pound, same with the blocks. Soil removal varied the most, a difference off over £800 from company to company!!!! Seriously unbelievable! It pays to spend time shopping around for each part of the build

Re: how much should it cost to build my pond
My Pond (14 5″x10 5″x 5ft) I spent the following:
Blocks *240 hollow £500
Mixamate for concrete base (C35 10″ deep with fibres) £900
5 skips £900 (obviously with a grab lorry you can save)
Rebar £120 (mesh plus rods for hollows)
sand/cement for back filling £150 -£200 ish
I dug mine by hand so didn’t need to hire a digger..
Labour/Time to complete work….
Digging with digger and moving soil to be taken away 2-3 days
By Hand : 5+ days
complete blockwork – 2-3 days
Concrete base 1 day (24 hrs) to set..
Probably 2 weeks work
£200 per day = £2000
Materials £1500 – £3000
So I would expect depending on what you’re getting for it to between from £3500 – £5000 ish or, half that if you have fun and do it yourself

Re: how much should it cost to build my pond
Sounds about hte same size aas mune.
Did digging and concrete myself, paid day rate to lay blocks and paid for fibreglasser. then all other stuff done by me.
Have to be honest. after the plans changed fora second time and we went the whole way with a “decent” build spec, I closed my eyes to the budget LOL.
But best guess about £5,000 ish all in.
(That includes no fish)
So the price you are being quoted for a hole and blockwork sounds pretty high.
I do know a pond builder who can give you a price either all in or partial build etc, at least you will have an expert opinion and a comparison quote.
Give me a PM if you want his details

Re: how much should it cost to build my pond
yes please I would like someone to give me an alternative quote.
I am away for a couple of weeks though
based on the comments I have received I have come to the conclusion that my builder did not want to really do the job.
He was also keen to lay block work and then pour in cement afterwards. I was a little concerned about this as i had not read of anyone doing this before.
thank everyone for your feedback. project back on

blocking then concreting is a perfectly acceptable way of doing it, just depends on your preference i suppose.

Re: how much should it cost to build my pond
to do blocking first you will have to do a foundation to build of…. then pour concrete for base….
waist of time if you ask me….
dig the pond out pour concrete base then build straight of base once dried…simples

Re: how much should it cost to build my pond
I just did a google search to see how much it should cost to build a Koi Pond and chose this forum to view.
I’ve had to register and can’t send any PMs until I’ve been active on the site. I would like to know the answer to the question though as we’re wanting to build a rather large one but the quotes we’re getting are over and above reasonable.
By the way, I am a female member and the handle describes me perfectly.
