How often do you clean filters? (pic of pur pond)

Hello

When we bought our current house the pond was in, the people we bought it off were moving to Austrialia and gave us NO advice for the pond.

We have been in the house 18 months now and I do what I can to try and keep the pond nice. Originally I changed all the filters, new UV lights and did a fresh start as the water was murky.

Since then I try and clean the filters probably each two months (using the pond water in a bucket)

It seems to be getting murky quicker lately in the sunny weather…

I’m going to take a sample of the water to our local pond place as they test this for us. We do have a home kit but they seem to know what they are doing a little better πŸ™‚

What do you recommend?

Here is our pond / fish

filters need constant maintainance wether it be purge and clean or cleaning of jap matting etc
be useful to know what filter system you are running as everyones pond and systems differ so it is hard to give you a real idea of what you should be doing

Your pond looks lovely, the water clear and fresh and the fish look healthy…. you must be doing something right [:D]

I’ll probably get jumped on for saying so, but i too clean my filter roughly every month, mainly because purging my CL3 in it’s current location is tricky, so i have to empty my filter to clean it but my water parameters are good and the clarity is spot on too.

Would be good to know what type of filter you have, i can get away with not cleaning my filter too regularly as it’s very effective and doesn’t require it [:)][:)][:)]

Greetings and welcome Stacey

As the others say pics of the filter would be helpful. I have a Yamitsu Kockney Koi 10000 and only clean the mechanical side (Brushes,Vortex and first set of matting) weekly, dont touch the K1 and second Jap matting at all it I can help it.

Hello

Sorry forgot the most important bit, its a Bioforce 9000 ? one has a UV light one doesn’t then there is a UV light (I think) on the surface and the actual pump in the pond.

That picture was taken when the pond is at its cleanest although recently its started going murky.

I’ve cleaned the filters again tonight !!

When you say clean the filter…do you mean you clean it up making it look like new or still leave it relatively dirty. Too much cleaning will kill off the beneficial bacteria that a filter needs to work.

There is a difference between a dirty filter and a clogged filter. One will let the water flow through!

As for cleaning a filter, as little as I can get away with.[;)]

Have you got an air pump suppling air to your pond, as this will help improve the waters clarity and general health of your pond and filters.

An important piece of equipment, especially if yours ponds open and as the weather improves.

Hi when you clean your filters make sure you use pond water and not tap water as the chlorine will kill the good bacteria in the filters.I don’t know your filter any chance of a photo.
You look to have some nice Koi there too [:)]

when i had my bioforce 9000’s , i used to clean the sponges with the hose pipe, trying to rinse the sponges out with pond water just never worked.
with the bio media, i used to just swirl the pond water about inside the filter then tip it out, add the sponges again, then off it went.
never had a prob this way in approx 2 years of having the filters, but they do need cleaning out once maybe twice a week depending on your stocking levels coz they can get *!*%*! up very quickly.

If you vac it regularly you’ll find that the water clarity will improve and the filters wont clog so often, when the fish are nosing about on the bottom do you see them raising small clouds of muddy water?

Hello

Update as had the water tested today and almost perfect πŸ™‚ so must be doing something right?

Your correct cleaning the filters with pond water almost imposible I use the hose and then duck pond water over them. As the water test was great this must be working?

Don’t know about the air thingy…. will take some pics of the pump setup

thanks
