Sturgeon!!

Morning all!!

Im quite interested in sturgeon and wondered if any of you guys keep or have kept them with your koi! i understand they get pretty damn big but a new build is on the way in the next 12-18months i reckon.

Does anyone know of any benefits or drawbacks to keeping them, or any special considerations??

cheers everyone

RE: Sturgeon!!

Hi Lee,

When I completed my pond someone told me if I bought a couple of Sturgeon and put them in they would keep the bottom clean and eat all the blanket weed, yeah right!!!!

I found them nothing but hassle, as they are bottom feeders you are supposed to feed them them small pellets that sink, well try this with a pond full of Koi and you will see that that the Sturgeon pellets do not have time to hit the bottom before being gobbled up by the Koi.

They did not keep the bottom clean nor did they eat the blanket weed.

The strange thing is I came out one morning following a storm and both Sturgeon were dead, floating on the top bent double, I can only put it down to lightning however the rest of the fish were fine.

On the positive side if you you do manage to keep them alive you are right, they do grow big.

Good Luck

RE: Sturgeon!!

I would not have them myself , some treatment cant be used with sturgen , or so they say we have some at work and if the pond needs treating it gets done and never had a problem.

RE: Sturgeon!!

After having a read of the link that sheba kindly posted it sounds like the bent sturgeon had died of either starvation (due to hungry koi!!) or lack of oxygen (maybe due to the storm)???[8|][8|]

RE: Sturgeon!!

i keep sturgeon i have a very large Siberian and two starlets and have no problems with them at all just have to make sure they have pleny of o2 and when feeding throw a few pellets to one side of the pond so the koi swim for them and when they re not looking lol throw some by the sturgeon
my siberian is very tame i get more enjoyment out of him than i do the other fish more often or not he ll swim up the sides to the top of the water if he is hungry and if i put my arms in the water he ll swim over and swim around my arms the best thing is when hes doing that the koi seem to swim over and join in but they do get big if your going to get some them get starlets they dont grow nowhere near as big about 3ft in the average pond
if you lack o2 in your pond your sturgeon will die first then the koi then the goldfish but if yourt goldfish die through a lack of o2 then your doing something seriously wrong lol

RE: Sturgeon!!

Hi Mick

I must admit i am really fascinated by them and very tempted by adding a couple of starlets to the pond.
Other than the O2 and food requirements, are their water requirements similar to that of koi??

RE: Sturgeon!!

I HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRE STURGEON..BUT WAS ALWAYS LED TO BELEIVE THEY OUTGROW MOST PONDS???
HOW BIG DO STERLETS GROW? AND OVER WHAT PERIOD OF TIME?
I PARTICULARLY LIKE THE DIAMOND BACKS AND ALBINO,S
THE ONLY PROBLEMS I HAVE SEEN ARE A MATES STURGEON GOT TANGLED IN BLANKET WEED AND DIED…APPARENTLY THEY CANT SWIM BACKWARDS TO RELEASE THEMSEVES…HE THEN BOUGHT ANOTHER AND IT COMMITTED HARI KARI BY GETTING INTO THE PUMP ENCLOSURE SOMEHOW AND PUTTING ITS HEAD IN THE IMPELLOR[:'(][:'(] THATS WHEN HE GAVE UP WITH THEM AND BOUGH KOI!
